How to Give an Impressive Impromptu Speech by Peter Khoury

Main Point: Because several of our INL Initiators are considering participating in the Table Topics Contest coming up, I thought I would share this article that may be helpful for them as well as all of our members who are chosen to present table topics during our meetings.  Khoury is an ex-pharmaceutical engineer turned national speaker.  He offered a great formula for impromptu speaking called FAT.  It is simple and I like it and intend to try it soon.  The first step in the formula is to express your feelings about the topic you are asked to speak on; excited? happy? relieved? confused?   Second, he suggests sharing a personal anecdote about the topic such as when you first heard about the topic or idea.  He reminds you to stick to the truth.   Finally, tie the anecdote and feeling back to the topic.   Khoury also offers some ideas on how to practice.  One is at your usual Toastmasters meetings but I found the other helpful as well.  He suggests practicing once a day in your car or office or home on a new topic.  Seems like a good idea to me.  This is a short article and worth a read.  Khoury also offers other topics you may be interested in.
