Key Quote: "By having a mediocre title, you're telegraphing to the audience that your speech is going to be its identical twin."

The other day we were leaving home depot when we saw a 1000-pound steer running along the sidewalk being followed by Idaho Falls finest animal control.  Hmm I thought, where's a good cowboy when you need em?  And believe me they needed one.  Turns out I was making a speech on the importance of storytelling in public speaking and I titled my speech "Where's a Good Cowboy When You Need Em".    I made the analogy of the importance of finding a good cowboy when you need 'em with finding a good story when you need one.  I can tell you the title peaked the audience interest because it was unique and several commented on it.  No doubt they will remember that title.  After the speech I thought more about the title and realized even before your introduction, your title has the ability to capture interest. Then I came upon speaking coach Matt Kramer's article and it reinforced my thinking that titles really are important. He provides three reasons that titles are important and the first is just what I learned, to stimulate interest before you even speak! Second, it can serve as a foundational phrase you can repeat in your speech to help folks remember your message.  This is something I did with my title about the cowboy.  Finally, he believes a title gives your speech clarity. This is a very short read with some advice on how to arrive at a good title.  Where's a good title when you need it?
